Which Pokemon Games Are Playable?
Obviously, the newer a console, the more complex and difficult it is to emulate. Currently, everything from the Game Boy Color to the Nintendo DS is able to be emulated on Android. That includes:
- Game Boy Color (GBC): Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow; Silver, Gold, and Crystal
- Game Boy Advance (GBA): Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald; FireRed and LeafGreen
- Nintendo DS (NDS): Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum; HeartGold and SoulSilver; Black and White; Black and White 2
Unfortunately, this means that 3DS games are unplayable. There’s just simply no way to emulate them on Android yet — so Pokemon X and Y, OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire, and X and Y can’t be emulated. Obviously, you won’t be playing Sun or Moon either.
How It All Works
As long as you’re coming into this with realistic expectations of what games you can play, this is what you’ll need:
- An emulator
- A ROM
An emulator is basically the game system. If you want to play GBC, GBA, and NDS games, you’ll need an emulator for each. Just because the consoles were backwards compatible doesn’t mean the emulators are.
Most emulators supports custom save states and fast-forwarding, both of which are extremely useful for Pokemon games. Custom save states mean you can have multiple save files going at once, and you can save at times you normally couldn’t, like in the middle of a battle.
What are your thoughts on fast forwarding in emulators? via /r/pokemon http://t.co/XFChNehUwx @HuubKe161 #GamingNews#Pokemon#PokemonRed…
— Pokemon News (@Pokemonreddit) July 11, 2015
Fast-forwarding also solves the issue of characters talking way too slowly, and it allows you to run around with speed without being told “this is not the place to ride your bicycle.”
A ROM is essentially the game. If you want to play Pokemon Red and Pokemon HeartGold, you’ll need a Pokemon Red ROM and a Pokemon HeartGold ROM.
Great, now you’re ready to dive in. Let’s find you some emulators and ROMs.
Which Emulator Should You Use?
The answer to this question depends on which console you’re looking to emulate, so let’s look at them separately.
If you don’t see an emulator on this list, it’s probably best to avoid it. Lots of spam emulators have popped up in the Play Store that are just copies of existing emulators with ads jammed into every corner — but we’ve tested these to ensure that they work well.
GBC
There’s really only one contendor for emulating this classic handheld console, and that’s My OldBoy! It comes in Free and $3.99 versions, but the Free version could definitely work for most people. It allows for regular in-game saves, fast-forwarding up to 2x speed, entering cheat codes, and customizing the controls.
Upgrading allows you to link up with other users to trade Pokemon, fast-forward faster than 2x, and save at any time. I’d say that’s worth $3.99, but that’s up to you. Either way, both the Free and Paid versions have perfect performance since it’s such an old console — and there are no ads! You can’t go wrong.
Download: My OldBoy! (Free) or ($3.99) on the Play Store
GBA
Much like with the GBC, the GBA has really one standout emulator: My Boy! This emulator is almost identical to My OldBoy! except that it plays GBA games instead.
Similar rules apply here: the Free version only allows 2x fast-forward speed and saving in-game. Upgrading to the $4.99 version allows you to save at any time and fast-forward up to 16x speed.
You can even link up to trade with or battle your friends! Though the best part is probably that it doesn’t have any ads, even in the Free version, unlike all the other available emulators.
Note that some older GBA emulators needed a BIOS file to work, but that’s not the case with My Boy!
NDS
First off, the free option: nds4droid. This emulator is completely free and open source with no ads. It has customizable controls, so you can put the buttons or D-pad wherever you want. Unfortunately, the performance won’t blow you away, but it’s good enough on most devices.
Like most emulators, it supports custom save states and cheat codes, but there’s no fast-forwarding. For playing games at normal speed, though, it gets the job done.
Download: nds4droid (Free) on the Play Store
On the other hand, if you’re willing to pay $5.99, you should absolutely check out DraStic. It has noticeably better performance, and it supports fast-forwarding.
You can try out the free version first to make sure that it works, but it will only allow for 30 minutes of gameplay before you’ll have to upgrade. Still, if you’ve got a few bucks to spare, it’s so worth it.
Download: DraStic DS Emulator (($5.99) on the Play Store
How Do You Get ROMs?
Sorry, but you’re on your own for this one. Thankfully, ROMs can be found easily with a simple Google search, but you should only download ROMs for games that you currently own. We can, however, give you some tips for downloading ROMs.
Make sure that you get the appropriate version for your region. After most ROM names, there will be a (J), (U), (E), or maybe some other letter depending on the game. J stands for Japan, U stands for United States, E stands for Europe, and so on.
Any of these regions will work with your emulator, but if you don’t speak Japanese and download the Japanese version, it might be a little difficult for you to navigate.
Also, pay attention to the file that is downloaded. ROMs come in ZIP files that don’t need to be unzipped, and some ROMs come as RAR files. If a website downloads an APK or EXE file, delete it. That’s not a ROM; that’s malwareMalware on Android: The 5 Types You Really Need to Know AboutMalware on Android: The 5 Types You Really Need to Know AboutMalware can affect mobile as well as desktop devices. ROM files are also very small. Pokemon Red measures just 370KB, while Black is 106MB.

Dude this was really helpful article. I was bumping my head here and there for these games and everytime getting shitty outcome. I didn't knew emulator concept at all. All I did was to download an apk file which would crash again and again and ultimately I'd uninstall that. Thank you for this bro.
I can emulate the game on GBA but i can't see anything but whole white in the screen
I am not able to find Pokémon black version (U) on any of the websites. At some websites, it is showing that the game is unavailable. At some, it is opening some websites showing some pop ups. On some of the websites, they are showing that Nintendo America has removed those rom files due to some copyright issues. Now what should I do to download pokémon black? Please help.
Nds4droid doesnt work. I tried selecting the file of the game downlaoded I wanted to play, but then the emulator app closes amd says: Unfortunately, nds4droid has stopped. Please help!
I downloaded pokemon white 2, but when I select the file on nds4droid, it says: Unfortunately, nds4droid has stopped. What can I do make it work? Are there any other ds lite or dsi emulators where I can play white 2? I really wanted to play that specific one and tried the it with pokemon black 2, but to the same result! Help please!
I don’t know about you but having to map the controls properly every time you play the game is unpractical.
Thank you. Much appreciated

how do you move a ROM from the computer to your phone?
You can transfer the file via wi-fi using the free android app 'Airdroid' or copy it to a location recognisable by the emulator using the phone's data cable. I mean recognisable as some software recognises only the internal memory while have R/W access on the microSD location too.

What you have to keep in mind thought is that legality and copyright for some of these downloads is questionable - so taking that into consideration you can do a quick search for Pokemon Roms and get Gameboy Advance, Nintendo DS, classic black and white GAMEBOY and GB Color Poke games of all sorts. Pokemon Red Version Started a Great Franchise And It’s As Good As Ever
When it comes to starting a worldwide phenomenon, few have ever done it as well as Pokemon Red. Indeed, it was The Game that started an international franchise since it was launched and, more importantly, it’s still one of the videogames with a high replay value!
Of course, Pokemon in general has been called several names – a passing fad by many, a spawn of Satan by many fundamentalist Christian groups, and an addictive game aming its fans – but we can all agree that it’s such a huge thing. In fact, it has grown to be one of Nintendo’s largest franchises and cash crops, a true behemoth in the videogame industry. With numerous Pokemon games created since the first version was released 10 years ago as well as the number of Pokemon characters increasing through the years – from 151 to 486 – the franchise will likely remain for several generations into the future.
While the fun in playing Pokemon has generally faded where I am concerned, no thanks to the fact that Nintendo has repeatedly milked it resulting in the succeeding games being boring, the original two games still have their appeal. Suffice it to say that not only did the Pokemon Red and Blue games started a worldwide hit, these also saved Nintendo from being completely swallowed by the competition – and what a competition it is considering the likes of Clash of Clans.
Gameplay
The Pokemon series has an interesting story that, from the start, hooked its audience. Basically, your game character is a trainer and you can assume any name you want in the virtual world. You live in a region known as Kanto specifically in Pallet Town, a tiny and cozy town.
One day, Professor Oak, one of the world’s leading researchers, wants to talk to you about an important matter. You are eventually given a Pokemon and a mission – to capture all 150 Pokemon scattered across Kanto and beyond. Your ultimate goal: To become the best Pokemon master the world has ever known.
For most of your mission, you will be wandering around the overworld while also battling with trainers and capturing their Pokemon characters. You main goal in all of your trials and triumphs, however, is to beat the Elite Four, a four-man group of the world’s best trainers. In order to accomplish it, you have to collect eight badges gathered from the Gym Leaders.
The Gym Leaders are also trainers but with a difference – each one specializes in training a powerful type of Pokemon and, thus, every single one of them has more powers than the average trainer. These specialist trainers even have their own gyms, which are buildings where they fight with other trainers.
You will find several different types of Pokemon characters. Each one is more powerful against at least one other type but every single one will also be weaker against one or more of the other types. Your job then as a trainer is to become a master of strategy, such as in terms of pitting the skills of your Pokemon against the other types to your advantage.
For example, you have three choices in the Pokemon starter set, namely, Bulbasaur, Squirtle, and Charmander. Since Charmander is a fire Pokemon, it can easily destroy Bulbasaur, a grass Pokemon but Charmander, in turn, can be beaten by Squirtle, a water Pokemon. Squirtle may beat Charmander in the game but it will be beaten by Bulbasaur.
And that’s just the start! Your rival, who you can also assign a name, will obviously pick the Pokemon type that will beat yours. Your strategy will obviously make a difference between winning and losing the game session.
The game screen changes as soon as the battle starts. You will see white background wherein your Pokemon and your rival’s Pokemon are displayed; you can view your Pokemon from its back so that you facing your rival, so to speak.
The battle screen displays four options, namely:
- Fight is the main option that your Pokemon utilizes for an attack mode. Each Pokemon has the ability to learn four moves, which can inflict damage on others, affect the status of others (e.g., burn, sleep, paralyze, and poison), and affect the stats of others (e.g., decrease your rival’s speed or increase your offense power).
- Pkmn (abbreviation for Pokemon) is used in switching Pokemon on during the battle.
- Item refers to your inventory, which can be filled with useful items including health-restoring stuff and which can be used in and out of battle.
- Run is a move that can be used to leave wild battles. But beware – it will not always work, not to mention that it isn’t exactly the best move in battle for obvious reasons.
This is where it gets interesting. When your Pokemon wins in a battle, it will gain a certain amount of experience points that will be accumulated over time. As soon as it gains a sufficient number of points, it will increase its stats and, in turn, it will become stronger – and you will have more power to win in the next battles.
Your Pokemon can also evolve into another species, such as Bulbasaur into Ivysaur and, in turn, into Venusaur. You can stop the evolution of your Pokemon, if you want it to.
You can also catch a wild Pokemon in a battle. You have to attack the wild Pokemon but you have to avoid making any moves that will make it faint. You should then toss a Pokeball at it to capture it and make it stay inside – and if it stays inside, then it’s yours to keep and train.
Keep in mind that you are only allowed to keep a maximum of six Pokemon characters at a time. You have to store the rest of your Pokemon in a special storage area as well as switch two Pokemon characters at any Pokemon center along the way.
You should also take note of the Pokemon centers’ location because these are useful in restoring the health of your Pokemon characters after being injured in battle. Each town usually has a Pokemon center, which also has a store where you can purchase a wide range of items including Pokeballs, healing potions, and revives (i.e., items designed to revive a Pokeman that has fainted in battle), among others.
But the game isn’t just battling with rival trainers and their Pokemon characters. You can also earn experience points by battling and defeating Team Rocket, an evil organization with the main goal of enslaving Pokemon and then using them for battle and money-making purposes. You will also be required to pass through a building and perform a wide range of tasks, such as fighting Team Rocket members, finding key cards and opening locked doors, and finding your way throughout the hideout with the use of bewildering teleporters.
Indeed, Pokemon Red has a sufficient number of interesting twists and turns, trials and triumphs, risks and rewards to keep players playing the game for several years to come. Plus, it’s such great fun especially when you play with your family and friends!
10/10
Graphics
Unfortunately, the graphics on Pokemon Red isn’t exactly one of its best points. When played on GameBoy color, you will definitely be a fan of the green, white and black characters as well as the reddish environment coupled with the white ground.
You also have a top down view of the game, a feature similar to the 2D Zelda games. The people and buildings are out of proportion with the former looking worse for the wear. The Pokemon sprites aren’t as numerous as expected with several actually sharing the same one.
On the upside, your rival’s Pokemon in battle will likely look good; just be sure to set realistic expectation as there are Pokemon characters that look awkward in comparison with their later versions with Pidget being a good example. During a battle, your Pokemon faces away from you and, like it or not, you will not like the view either - everything just seems to be bunch of enlarged pixels. Many Pokemon will not even be recognizable when viewed from the back.
Yet another downside is the slightly generic and, thus, boring attack visuals. But if you aren’t too picky about them, you will find them one of the high points in the game.

Sound
Even the sound isn’t up to par. Each Pokemon has a unique cry, usually just garbled noises, but it isn’t an animal-like sound – think of it as the sound of a dying animal and you get the idea. You can choose from four battle tunes with wild Pokemon, trainer battles, gym leaders, and the final battle getting a battle tune each. All of the battle tunes sound satisfactory at first but these quickly become boring.
On the upside, all of the overworld themes are satisfactory. Small tones are also present for certain movements, such as turning on the computer, opening a door, and riding an elevator. But there’s no voice acting for any of the characters in the game, a minor downside.
7/10
![Pokemon Pokemon](https://s1-ssl.dmcdn.net/F9UTZ/1280x720-Gnk.jpg)
Replayability
Pokemon Red dominates the field when it comes to replay value. The game has 150 – 151, if the mew is counted - Pokemon characters to capture, which will be used in filling up the Pokedex.
Some of the Pokemon cannot even be captured because these should be traded with a friend, if and when you want to capture all of them. Since each Pokemon can be leveled up to 100, a challenging task that requires great skill and plenty of time spent playing the game. Just imagine getting every single one of the 150 Pokemon characters to 100 and you have a game that can be played several hours each day.
You must also remember a few rules, such as:
- You cannot battle a trainer more than once except for the Elite Four.
- You can fight wild Pokemon whenever you like.
Plus, Pokemon Red has plenty of replay so that you can come back to the game after you’ve beaten it.
Pokemon X And Y Emulator

Amount of Violence
Critics point to the apparent violence of Pokemon, especially the part about teaching your pets to fight and kill other animals. But this is far from the truth. The Pokemon characters don’t necessarily die in the game since they’re just knocked out of their wits although the Pokemon Tower is a graveyard. Even the main antagonist in the game, Team Rocket, isn’t as evil as pictured since their main goal is to make the Pokemon servants, not kill them all.
10/10
In conclusion, Pokemon Red is considered as among the world’s bestselling games ever, aside from its place in videogame history as the game that launched one of Nintendo’s largest franchises. Millions of Pokemon-themed merchandise including games, cards, action figures and stuffed toys have been sold while the original 151 Pokemon characters have increased to more than 400.
Indeed, Red may have its flaws – what game doesn’t have flaws, anyway – but it’s a great game overall.

A Video Game Console Emulator is typically divided into modules corresponding roughly to the emulated subsystem of a computer. The following modules are the usual composition of an emulator: a memory subsystem module, a CPU emulator or CPU simulator, and various I/O device emulators. Several video game console emulators have already been created and released for free such as VBA for the Gameboy Advance Pokemon games, Gens for the SEGA Genesis, and ePSXe for the Sony Playstation Pokemon titles. There are also new additions to this version, such as The PokeStar Studios and the DNA Splicers. A Ranking of Pokemon Games
With more than 20 core titles, many of which have slight variations as well as dozens of side stories (about 30 as of last count), the Pokemon world is a huge one. Newcomers into it will likely be overwhelmed by the things that must be understood. In the following sections, I shall rank the series so that you can catch all of the best, whether you’re a newbie or a veteran seeking to restart your Pokemon League game.
I must first emphasize that this isn’t Kotaku’s picks - instead, I made this list on my own. I must also say that this list doesn’t mean that one game in the series is superior in comparison with the rest. I must also say that I would give every game a gold star if that’s possible but it isn’t based on my personal experience of playing all of the games – and I mean I played all of the games in the market now.
I will only be discussing the Pokemon games core series, which span the Red and Blue games to the Black 2 and White 2 games. I have also decided to skip the apparently countless spin-offs and side stories in the current Pokemon Universe. I wanted to save on the time, energy and effort as well as the arguments and headaches that come with discussing the nitty-gritty details, too.
I also want to emphasize that this isn’t a definitive list. I am actually encouraging you, our dear readers, to provide inputs and feedbacks about your own Pokemon franchise rankings. You may even be able to change my mind about these rankings so place your comments after reading the article.
Video Game Emulator together with a patch can also translate Pokemon games into other languages, modify existing games, and help in developing homebrew demos and fresh games for older systems.
Other benefits of Video Game Console Emulators are:
- It maintains the original appearance of Pokemon games, touch and feel of the original because that is similarly significant as the digital data inside.
- Over time, it proves to be more cost-efficient solution to users - emulators are free.
Pokémon Generation I
Red / Blue / Yellow
Who says that the original can easily be eclipsed by the succeeding generations? With the Pokemon Generation I games, which created the international phenomenon we know today, they are as challenging as ever. For example, you will still find that catching the 151 original Pokemon still has its challenges despite the absence of running and the presence of dual types. You will still find deep satisfaction in starting in Pallet Town, defeating Team Rocket, and beating Gary or Blue, not to mention the satisfaction that comes from the knowledge that Generation I and Generation II are virtually connected.
The hard part: Where will you find either a Gameboy or a Gameboy Advance that can be used to play these Pokemon games? Keep in mind that Red/Green were redeveloped for Generation III.
Of all the games, Yellow was the most popular game experience for children in the post-90s times, especially for those whose childhood years were marked by avid watching of the popular Pokemon cartoon. It was also memorable because of its deliberately close resemblance to the Pokemon television series, thanks to the Team Rocket addition, as well as Pikachu’s attitude of following Red around and for its Pika Pika sounds; Pokemon characters usually just made garbled noises. It also had a great mini-game with a surfing Pikachu.
Pokémon Generation II
Gold / Silver / Crystal
Of course, Pokemon’s first generation was special! But Pokemon started opening up to new possibilities in Generation II for several reasons. Dual types were formally introduced – for example, Charizard can fly now although I already knew it in Yellow but not in Green, Red and Blue – while the introduction of the day-and-night cycle allowed for new ways in playing. The time of the day or night now mattered since certain Pokemon characters can only be caught at specific times, which made the gameplay interesting yet frustrating, too. Generation II also expanded on the previous Friendship/Happiness system, in addition to the day and week cycles, which was introduced during the Yellow stage. The result: Pokemon grew through their apparent devotion and dedication to their trainers.
Aside from these new elements, the second generation Pokemon also had the longest main game section, thanks to the original Gyms addition. Notable developments were also made, such as bringing back Brock, giving Red a Pikachu, and allowing players to fight Red, which were such an explosive concept here the fans where concerned. Add in the cellphone system allowing trainers to engage in battle again, which resulted in more replay value, and Pokemon II took off.
I believe, too, that 251 Pokemon had the right amount going for it!
Of all the Generation 2 games, Pokemon Crystal was arguably the best game, thanks to the fact that it was a Gold and Silver extension. Crystal also had more replay value because of the addition of the choice of gender for its main character, the battle tower, and the Suicune central storyline – indeed, the already packed installment became better!
If you were unsuccessful in finding a Gameboy on which to play Generation II, you needn’t worry. This is because the game designers remade the Gold and Silver games into SoulSilver and HeartGold in Generation IV.
Pokémon Generation III
Ruby / Sapphire / Emerald
Leaf Green / Fire Red
Generation III could have been ranked higher on this list, especially with the addition of better contests including double battles, better animation, and better movement (e.g., running). But with the new focus on the value systems in IV and EV, the games became too serious in my opinion, thus, their drop to number three. While I can also understand the appeal of the Pokemon contests, these weren’t right up my alley.
There was also the weaker designs of Pokemon in Generation III, which I consider among the biggest issues. For example, Blaziken, Torchic, and Feebas were just too weak in comparison with the originals while many design choices, such as the removal of the time cycle with more focus on the weather element, were just too odd for my taste.
While there aren’t any Generation III breakout titles, Emerald stood out in my opinion. Perhaps this isn’t surprising as Emerald is a Ruby and Sapphire extension, as is the case for Yellow, Platinum, and Crystal.

Pokémon Generation IV
Diamond / Platinum / Pearl
HeartGold / SoulSilver
Generation IV has many things going for it, such as the fact that these were the first fully-3D Pokemon games and the first games wherein Pokemon characters can be battled and exchanged online. But why then doesn’t it rank higher in this list despite its remakes of Gold and Silver? This is because, at its heart, both SoulSilver and HeartGold are remakes, even when Typhlosion can follow me all over town.

Generation IV is widely considered as a technological milestone in the Pokemon universe despite these debatable developments. Plus, it made Pokemon look better as well as paved the way for the upcoming X and Y newer animations. But as a standalone game, I must say that it’s not a major leap from Generation II and Generation III.
You can’t go wrong with either SoulSilver or HeartGold. Your game experiences will likely be better in comparison with Generation IV’s three main games, thanks to the extra gym battles and the feelings of nostalgia.
Pokémon Generation V
Black / White
Black 2 / White 2
The Generation V games were considered as direct sequels to the Pokemon game, a first for the series. But it wasn’t much a forward development since it only increased the number of Pokemon characters, which was already relatively large then. In fact, there are now 649 Pokemon excluding those seen in X and Y so far.
Generation V has its good point, too, particularly that the Technical Machines (TM) were designed with highly similar qualities as the HMs – both now have infinite uses. But even its addition was a double-edge sword in that the game became easier to play and, in the process, less challenging. Even until now, I have yet to decide whether a flamethrower as a TM is a good thing or not.
In Generation V, my favorites were Black 2 and White 2 for several reasons. Their storylines were more player-friendly (i.e., accessible), especially when White and Black were already part of your game repertoire. Despite such similarities, nonetheless, these were individual titles able to hold their own ground. The Black Tree and White Tree Hollow addition also provides several extra hours of battle times as well as added a plot extension.
The games were also engaging, challenging in a way, and fun to play. But at day’s end, Pokemon fatigue becomes evident, no thanks to the fact that the Generation V characters were just too many to trade, catch and battle with.
